Sleeping

While the baby was in the hospital, the crib was slightly tilted (head up, feet down). I guess babies like that position. When we tried putting her in the flat crib she didn't feel comfortable. We ended up using the Rock n' Play for her to sleep next to our bed. That was her primary bed for about the first 6 weeks. Then we moved her to the crib with a wedge beneath the mattress.

Seeing the Pediatrician

Once we got home, we continued the breastfeeding and swaddling. We even tried putting drops of formula on the nipple to help with the feeding. We primarily used the Fisher-Price Rock n' Play Sleeper when we put her down to rest. We also used the Fisher-Price Cradle 'N Swing quite often.
When we went to see the Pediatrician our baby weighed in at 5lb 5oz, so she had lost over 14% in weight. We were told it was fairly normal for infants to lose 10% but based on her current weight we should supplement with some formula until the breast milk came in. We fed the baby some formula right in the doctor's office to get her some sustenance. We were given a little disposable syringe that we could use to help avoid nipple confusion. We started with supplementing 15 ml (0.5 oz) of formula during each feed. We were instructed to return in a few days for a weight check to see how things were going. We ended up having a series of weight checks those first few weeks as the doctors wanted to closely monitor the situation.
We also set up an appointment for a lactation consultant to see if they could assist with the breastfeeding.

First days

This is a retroactive recap of our experiences with feeding our little baby. It will be primarily from my perspective (the father's).

We welcomed a lovely daughter into the world on a Saturday morning, she was born at 6lb 3oz. In the hospital we did the standard thing of putting the baby to the breast every 2 hrs or so. We were learning about being parents and dealing with deciphering what the baby needed. Whenever the nurses swaddled or held her, she seemed to calm down. We didn't quite have the touch.
On the second night, the baby was being particularly fussy, so one of the nurses put some drops of glucose water on mommy's nipple to try to encourage the baby to latch better and feed. That seemed to provide some temporary relief.
Before leaving the hospital, we made an appointment to see our pediatrician. We were told to schedule it for Wednesday (4 days after birth), but the Doctor was busy that day so we scheduled it for Tuesday.
We left the hospital with baby on Monday in the early afternoon.
